Skin Resurfacing with the Fraxel Dual Laser

Laser used
Fraxel Dual – this laser is called “Dual” because it has the ability to produce two difference wavelengths of light, each with a different purpose.

What it does
The 1550nm wavelength penetrates deeply to stimulate collagen and elastin production to make skin thicker, tighter and smoother.

The 1927nm wavelength treats the skin more superficially to remove unwanted brown pigment.

How it works
The 1550nm wavelength disrupts collagen and elastin causing the body to replace them. This improves the skin’s texture and tone.

The 1927nm wavelength breaks up melanin pigment so that the body’s own scavengers called macrophages can gobble it up and dispose of it. It is appropriate for larger areas of brown pigment such as freckles, multiple brown spots and melasma.

What can be treated
Fine lines, shallow wrinkles, uneven and crepey texture, sun damage, discoloration due to sun spots, age spots, melasma and enlarged pores.

Why it's better
Fraxel achieves the amazing results seen with more aggressive treatments without removing the whole skin surface which can cause scarring and require many weeks of recovery. This is possible because Fraxel leaves bridges of skin intact which speed the healing process. Fraxel rejuvenates the skin surface making it younger in appearance and healthier in function.

How to prepare
Patients should arrive 1 hour before treatment to apply a topical anesthetic. Please also observe the guidelines found in Before Your Laser Appointment.

How will it feel
Patients can experience heat or a prickling sensation. Pain is limited by a powerful 40% topical anesthetic compounded especially for me and is more powerful than anything available commercially. Discomfort is also minimized by Fraxel's special cooling system which blows cold air across the skin during treatment.

Procedure time
20 to 30 minutes.

Recovery time
2 days red (think sunburn), 2 days bronze (think tan). My patients do this treatment on Saturday and are back at work on Monday.

Treatments necessary
3 - 4 treatments spaced one month apart to stimulate collagen and elastin production.

Procedure results
The skin begins to become smoother, tighter and thicker at 3 months after treatment. Uneven coloring and brown spots fade during the week after treatment.

Maintaining treatment benefit
Use of the Obagi Nuderm System will continue the process begun by laser treatment. This system causes regression and suppression of brown spots, promotes collagen remodeling and the production of new elastin and prevents the sun from damaging the new skin surface. Dr. Overman, recommends uses and carries the Obagi NuDerm System.
