There are two main categories of treatment:
- Injections that release tension in facial muscles, allowing wrinkles to relax
- Injections that fill in wrinkles causing treated areas to regain youthful smoothness
Both categories of treatment are described below:
Botox® and Dysport® are injected precisely to relax specific facial muscles.
This eliminates forehead creases, crow's feet, and frown lines (AKA "elevens"), lifts loose skin which forms a hood over the eyelids, and erases puckers or dimples around the mouth and chin.
The result is a refreshed, friendly and youthful appearance.
Dr. Overman is such a believer in the success and value of these treatments that she is one of her own clients!
Concern over advisability of using a toxin
Botox® and Dysport® are made from the naturally occurring botulinum toxin.
Some people may hesitate to try something described as a toxin, however, be reassured that botulinum neurotoxin type A is well tested.
It has been in medical use since the 1970s when it was first used as a treatment for unbalanced eye muscles.
It became FDA approved for both the treatment of twitching eyelids and unbalanced eye muscles in 1989.
Because of its proven ability to relax muscles, Botox® has been used off label as a wrinkle treatment since 1997 and received FDA approval for this purpose in 2002.
Millions of Botox injections are done for medical and cosmetic purposes worldwide every year.
How long do the effects of Botox and Dysport last?
Effects vary, but 3 months is the average duration for beginners.
But often people who use these products regularly find that the benefits seem to last a bit longer each time.
Fillers, such as Juvederm® and Voluma®, are used to treat wrinkles in areas where preventing muscle movement is not desirable.
The most well known treatment area is the wrinkles around the mouth.
Dr. Overman offers anti-aging treatment to eliminate lines around the mouth, camouflage jowls, smooth chins, restore volume to earlobes and lips, and recover jawlines from excess flesh.
Filler treatments are simple and non-surgical.
The medicine is injected under the skin to bring the indented skin level with the surrounding skin.
That makes the face appear instantly smoother.
Safety Concerns
These fillers used by Dr. Overman are made of a substance that occurs naturally in the body.
That significantly reduces the risk of reactions associated with artificial fillers.
How long do fillers last?
Published results suggest 6 months to 2 years, but Dr Overman notes that she often sees people whose wrinkles haven't fully returned more than two years after treatment.
These people enjoy an advantage because they only need touch up treatment at a lower cost than the initial treatment.
Growing old is obligatory; looking old is optional.
